A new God of War game – God of War Sons of Sparta has officially arrived, giving fans a surprise return to Kratos’ Greek origins while they patiently wait for the rumored remake of the original trilogy. Released worldwide on February 12, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5, the game launched during Sony’s State of Play presentation as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration.
Developed by Santa Monica Studio in partnership with Pittsburgh-based Mega Cat Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sons of Sparta marks the 10th installment in the long-running series. Chronologically, it is the earliest entry yet, serving as a prequel set before 2013’s God of War: Ascension. The story follows a young Kratos as he trains at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos, exploring themes of duty, honor, and brotherhood.
Unlike the cinematic third-person style of 2018’s God of War and God of War Ragnarök, this new entry shifts to a 2D Metroidvania-style action-platformer format. Players guide young Kratos through side-scrolling environments, battling mythological enemies using a spear, shield, and powerful “Gifts of Olympus”. Exploration and combat blend together in classic action-platformer fashion, offering a fresh take on the franchise’s brutal roots.
The return to the Greek mythology-inspired theme had been rumored in 2025 by industry insider Jeff Grubb before being confirmed at launch. Notably, T.C. Carson reprises his role as Kratos for the first time since Ascension, serving as the narrator, while Antony Del Rio voices the younger Spartan warrior. The game should take around 6 to 10 hours to complete, depending on if you’re a hardcore completionist or not.
The new God of War Game – Sons of Sparta is available digitally in Standard and Digital Deluxe editions – currently $29.99 and $39.99 respectively. The Deluxe edition includes bonus in-game content, a digital art book, soundtrack, and new PSN avatars. So far the game has earned a 4.9/5.0 rating globally on the PlayStation Store. Will you be grabbing the latest God of War title?
