Ever since Hogwarts Legacy became one of 2023’s biggest hits, fans of Harry Potter and the game have been eager to know when they’ll return to the Wizarding World. While Warner Bros. hasn’t officially announced a launch date, recent comments from executives give us a strong clue about the Hogwarts Legacy 2 release date window.
The original game, developed by Avalanche Software and published under Warner Bros. Games, was released in February 2023 and quickly became a massive commercial success. It ranked among PlayStation’s most-played single-player titles, with many players spending dozens – if not hundreds – of hours exploring Hogwarts and its surrounding open world. Rather than focusing heavily on post-launch expansions, Avalanche wasted little time shifting its attention, at least internally, toward a sequel.
Development on Hogwarts Legacy 2 reportedly began no later than mid-2024, based on information like job listings and corporate comments. Warner Bros. Discovery executives have repeatedly emphasized that expanding their biggest franchises is a top priority. During a recent earnings call, JB Perrette, President of Global Streaming and Games, described 2025 as a “reset year” and suggested that major franchise releases will land in 2027 and 2028. While he didn’t name specific titles, that timeline lines up perfectly for a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy.
There’s another important factor at play: HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, which is targeting an early 2027 debut. Warner Bros. has made it clear that it wants better synergy across its film, TV, and gaming divisions. Launching Hogwarts Legacy 2 around the same time as the show would be a smart strategy to maximize excitement and boost commercial success for the brand.

Despite recent restructuring – including studio closures and corporate shakeups – Warner Bros. continues to highlight Harry Potter as one of its core gaming pillars.
