League of Legends may be preparing for one of its biggest social changes in years: expanded voice chat. While players have long been able to talk with premade party members, new findings suggest developer/publisher Riot Games could soon allow full team-wide voice communication – even with strangers.
The speculation began after data miners uncovered references in the Public Beta Environment (PBE) to “VOICE COMMS ABUSE” report categories, along with interface elements for different voice options. According to these leaks, players may have access to separate buttons – one for party-only chat and another for communicating with the entire team. That would mark a major shift from the current system, where real-time voice is restricted to friends you queue up with.
On paper, global team voice chat on League of Legends could strengthen coordination, similar to other competitive games that have native voice chat capabilities, like Dota 2, Overwatch, and CS:GO. MOBAs thrive on teamwork, and quick callouts about objectives, jungle paths, or incoming ganks can make the difference between victory and defeat, especially when competing against an opposing team who are using other forms of voice chat like Discord. When communication flows and the team vibe is positive, voice chat can genuinely elevate the experience.
However, anyone familiar with competitive online games (especially League of Legends) knows there’s another side to the coin. MOBAs are intense, high-pressure environments where a single mistake can spiral into frustration. Voice chat in similar games has often become a channel for heated arguments and, at times, outright toxicity. Text chat in LoL can get crazy as it is. Some players have already joked that the first sign of voice chat appearing alongside a new abuse report category feels “on brand” for the game.
Riot will likely need to invest heavily in moderation tools if this feature launches. Clear reporting systems, voice monitoring safeguards, and easy opt-out options will be essential. The good news? Players who prefer peace and quiet should still be able to mute or disable voice entirely. Riot has probably been preparing for this feature for years, so expect the system to be as good as any other game.
For now, Riot hasn’t officially confirmed a release date. But if the PBE files are any indication, voice chat with the whole team could soon be coming to the Rift – for better or worse. What do you guys think? Will League of Legends add Voice Chat? Will it add to the experience, or make things even more “toxic”?
