The Nioh 3 release date is set for February 6, 2026, with the game currently confirmed for both the PlayStation 5 and PC. This release window gives developer Team Ninja nearly six years since Nioh 2, a much larger release gap than the previous installment, largely in part to the third game’s more ambitious scope and heavier technical overhaul.
The Road to Nioh 3
The Nioh franchise began with Nioh, a game that took nearly a decade to reach release with a famously long and reworked development cycle. When it launched in 2017, it stood out for combining “Souls-like” difficulty with fast, stance-based combat and an addictive Diablo-style loot system rooted in Japanese history and Yokai mythology.
That formula was refined and expanded with Nioh 2, which was released in 2020. By introducing a customizable protagonist and Yokai Shift mechanics, Nioh 2 deepened player freedom while maintaining the brutal challenge the series is known for. The game was both a critical and commercial success, firmly cementing Nioh as one of Team Ninja’s flagship IPs.
What is Nioh 3?
Nioh 3 is a third-person action RPG that follows historical Japanese figure Tokugawa Takechiyo, the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu, as he battles yokai and supernatural threats on his path toward becoming Shogun. Like Nioh 2, players can fully customize the protagonist’s appearance, but the biggest evolution comes through its dual playstyle system.
Players can freely switch between Samurai and Ninja playstyles at any time. Samurai combat closely resembles earlier Nioh games, featuring a trio of weapon stances, Ki (Stamina) management, “Ki Pulse” recovery, a new parry mechanic, and powerful “Arts Proficiency” attacks. The Ninja playstyle is faster and more evasive, emphasizing aerial movement, ranged combat, and ninja tools instead of stances. It introduces “Mist,” a clone-based ability for deception and high-damage positioning.
The game also expands beyond linear missions, offering larger explorable areas, optional challenges, side quests, and cooperative multiplayer modes for both boss fights and open-field exploration. And as you can see in newly-released gameplay footage below, the game looks amazing graphically.
According to early developer statements, Nioh 3 aims to be a true next-generation leap rather than a simple iteration. Combat remains the core focus, but players can expect expanded build variety, more complex enemy behaviors, and larger, more interconnected areas than previous entries. Without a doubt, the third Nioh game is the most ambitious.
Building off of two highly rated action titles, Nioh 3 is shaping up to be one of the most significant action RPG releases of the generation as its release approaches. Let us know what you’re expecting from the highly-anticipated sequel in the comments below.
